State, Water District Seeking IT Leaders for Vacancies

A chief information officer position is among a handful of IT leadership roles that the state government and a large California water district are trying to fill.

State and local governments are recruiting for some high-level IT jobs, including a chief information officer (CIO) position. Here are some recent postings:

  • A chief information officer position, with a job classification of IT Manager II, is open with the State Lands Commission. This position reports to the commission’s assistant executive officer and oversees everything related to IT. Areas of responsibility include IT operations, business advocacy and strategic planning. The application deadline is July 11, and the position has a salary range of $8,949 to $10,877.
  • The state Department of General Services is recruiting for a privacy program officer, classification IT Manager I, to work under the CIO to lead, plan, direct and implement the department’s privacy program. “This position acts as a consultant on privacy impact for departmental programs, systems, processes, and initiatives to ensure federal and state privacy compliance requirements are met throughout the System Development Life Cycle,” according to the job posting. The application deadline is July 10, and the monthly salary range is $7,376 to $9,884.
  • The state Public Employment Relations Board (PERB) is recruiting for an IT Specialist II to serve as the board’s information security officer, data security coordinator and disaster recovery coordinator, and is “the only dedicated IT staff at PERB.” This position has several requirements, including “expert-level knowledge of IT systems and software, including networking concepts and practices including router protocols, Cisco switches, security devices, using advanced software and troubleshooting tools and scripting methods (and) cloud computing platforms.” The application deadline is July 15, and the monthly salary range is $6,979 to $9,354.
  • The California Department of Insurance is recruiting for a Principle Based Reserving Architect (IT Specialist III) to “lead the technology components related to the implementation of PBR (principle based reserving) and assist the chief systems actuary with all relevant technical components of the PBR program,” the job posting says. “The incumbent will also work with other technical staff to architect processes to test life insurance systems, which includes data analysis, standardization of data models, facilitating change management, risk analysis, project oversight and development of interface standards.” The application deadline is July 8, and the monthly salary range is $7,471 to $10,012.
  • The California Department of Justice is advertising for a system administrator for Windows, an IT Specialist II classification, to “architect, install, test, modify, evaluate and maintain complex computer systems,” the job posting says. “The incumbent is the ultimate technical authority and acts as the technical mentor to other administrators within the unit. … The incumbent will lead the most complex projects, which includes troubleshooting, monitoring, enhancement and maintenance of the computer systems that house the department’s critical applications. The incumbent formulates strategic planning activities and acts as a consultant to other application staff, network staff, system administration staff, vendors and agencies as the recognized technical specialist for the department’s Windows/Virtualization environment.” The application deadine is July 9, and the monthly salary range is $6,777 to $9,081.
  • The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, a consortium of 26 cities and water districts serving almost 19 million people, is recruiting for an Oracle Enterprise Applications manager. The manager is “responsible for managing and supervising the design, development, integration, implementation, and administration of a wide variety of enterprise applications,” according to the job posting. “Areas of responsibility include maintaining and upgrading applications; evaluating, planning, designing, and implementing new and updated business applications; ensuring reliability and availability of enterprise applications; managing design projects; and researching technology innovations to determine potential application to Metropolitan business needs.” The application deadline is Aug. 30, and the position has an annual salary range of $131,019 to $171,288.
