Veteran State Technology Staffer Takes New Role

The 16-year-plus California Department of Technology employee has been promoted to a position elsewhere in the department that will make use of his skills.

A veteran manager at the state technology department is bringing his considerable skill set and expertise to a new team.

Conrad Long, a longtime executive with the California Department of Technology (CDT), has been promoted from DevSecOps (development, security and operations) manager to DevSecOps manager of the Security Solutions Engineering Team. In March, he discussed the culture change toward transparency and open source now underway at the state.

“That’s really our paradigm here — not only are we developing things, but we’re developing it in a way that then we can provide it as open source so that other public-sector entities can take advantage of that. We’re not working in isolation,” Long told Techwire then.

Long has been with CDT since December 2004. He was part of the unit that is now overseen by Rick Klau, state chief technology innovation officer and deputy director of CDT’s Office of Enterprise Technology (OET). Klau, a former senior operating partner at Google Ventures, joined the state in February, taking over as OET deputy director from Manveer Bola, who had been acting in that role, and as state CTIO from Scott Gregory, who joined the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection last year.

Long’s new position as DevSecOps manager in Security Solutions Engineering, which he began last month, will place him in a unit overseen by Vitaliy Panych, who was affirmed by Gov. Gavin Newsom in January as state chief information security officer after serving as acting CISO for two years. Long is now part of CDT’s Office of Information Security, according to LinkedIn, and will serve as senior security engineering manager of the Security Operations Center and manage CDT’s Security Solutions Engineering and Administration teams.
