A New Engine Driving Innovation in State Technology

The role of the state CIO is being transformed by challenges to traditional business models, by emerging technologies that have the potential to redefine what we consider as "IT", and by the drive to implement digital government.

As the state IT and business landscape continues to evolve, state CIOs are asked to navigate uncharted territories. This requires not only the agility to respond to the unexpected, but also the strategic vision to anticipate opportunities and plan for an uncertain future.

For the eighth consecutive year, Grant Thornton partnered with NASCIO and CompTIA to survey state CIOs, asking them to share how they provide essential state IT services while managing rising customer expectations. We were particularly interested in the continued evolution of the CIO as a broker of shared services, the IT workforce challenges facing CIOs, and the use of data management and analytics at an enterprise level.

We found that state CIOs are leading innovation in their states to meet ever-changing circumstances and expectations. As state legislatures and business leaders seek opportunities to advance IT services in their state, CIOs are uniquely situated to champion new solutions and provide insight on best practices.
